    Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀

You have found me on this St. Pats Day having taken another one of our great escapes from the “madness”, I mean the celebration that grips and transforms Savannah.

Now before we set off on the road though Neal decorated our little apartment with some celebratory green.

This year our great escape took us to place that is always celebrating green.

A scenic view of a wide two-lane highway stretching ahead, lined with trees on both sides, under a partly cloudy sky.

Well where did we go you ask? Follow the signs.

A U.S. flag and a Texas flag flying on poles against a blue sky with clouds, in front of a building and a parking area with a handicap sign.

A forested area featuring tall pine trees against a clear blue sky with scattered clouds. Power lines extend into the scene.

    Our cabin away from home.

A gray car parked in front of a single-story house surrounded by trees, featuring a ramp and multiple windows.

Ok, we did a bit of decorating here too! Don’t laugh.

A red sign displaying the number 9, adorned with a green beaded necklace, mounted on a wooden post.

Travel buddies found a spot and wisteria cradled affirmations of love.

You Can’t be in the great outdoors without a meal at a picnic table. Yum! An all natural centerpiece of pine cones, dogwood branch, tea olive branch and holly branch.

The park has a natural spring that flows to a small dam.

Lake Magnolia offered paddle boats and fishing. We did not partake.

Two paddle boats, one red and one blue, docked at a wooden pier on a calm water surface.

When Long Leaf Pine Ruled the Land

Have you seen one? Head to the woods!

Longleaf pine, is found in the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains from southeastern Virginia to central Florida and west to eastern Texas, and in the Piedmont region and Valley and Ridge province of Georgia and Alabama.” [https://plants.usda.gov/factsheet/pdf/fs_pipa2.pdf]

Magnolia Springs State Park, Millen, Georgia

After reading “The Ecology of A Cracker Childhood” by Janisse Ray, (Great book! I recommend it!), I began to notice these magnificent trees were all around Georgia, not just in the state parks.

“Longleaf Pine, reaches a height of 98–115 ft and a diameter of 28 in. Longleaf Pine takes 100 to 150 years to become full size and may live to 500 years old.” [https://www.augustaga.gov/1645/Longleaf-Pine]

Its leaves or needles grow 10 to 18 inches long, in crowded clusters of 3 to a sheath; cones are 6 to 10 inches long and dull brown.
