Still reeling from my once in a life “field” photo shoot during our drive back to main campus I was a ready to get back to Neal’s alumnus tour of Berry College.
His old dormitory, the Ford Complex, all women Dorms and the Ford Performing Arts Center formerly the Ford Dining Hall. We drove all around Berry thinking and talking about how things had changed.
WinShape Center, host camps run by Chik-fil-A is on campus. Driving around to see all the student buildings Neal could remember and the, low a behold… the deer!
Red deer lounging, Berry College Campus, Rome, Georgia.
Never before in my life have I seen deer that didn’t run when people were near by. These animals could give no care to student life or teacher’s syllabi, tender blades of well manicured lawn grass was the focus of the day.
Again I put the car in park, abandoning poor Neal’s quest of “college days remembered” for the sake of my tip-toeing around trees and bushes like a sniper. I was taking aim but with a canon EOS rebel SL1, 75-300mm. My stealthy skills acquired from 23 years of military service was nothing to the keen senses of these deer.
Ears point up, twitch, noses flair. They have my scent! Yet all is well! This is Berry College. All students must apply, sometimes denial letters are sent and all deer automatically accepted on this campus. After all it was their home first!
I’m ready for my next trip to Berry College! Come on! You want to ride with us?
On our latest trip to Berry College in September 2019, a highlight to this adventure was returning to the site of another magical memory for Neal, The Old Mill. See post below.
On the small college road leading away from main campus towards the voluminous hiking hills and the Mill, I was surprised to see a lone deer a mere few feet the road. I kept drive but was assured the deer would there on our return.
I quickly pulled off the road at a distance and walk up to the spot I was before. Instead of one deer I was awestruck to see…

These deer did not run. They just grazed in the field. Other people pulled off the road too. After a while they sauntered away.

Seeing the deer very closely from my car.
Berry College, my husband’s alma mater. He loves to recount to me his wonderful memories of early winter mornings, seeing deers standing in the “quad” on campus. I wanted to see this wonderful place. So we made a trip to Rome Georgia. We headed to Berry College.
River Otter, Savannah River Front, Savannah, Georgia.
This little guy was swimming and diving in the river along the side of the Savannah’s River walk. Like most places, Savannah has become a ghost town without tourists traveling and with fewer container ships coming in to port the animals are making a comeback! Yes!
