The Look Back: Unfolding Blessings

The Look Back 2013–2019: June 2015

First published June 12, 2015 Revisited with a new reflection.

We’re going back to June 2015 to a daisy with raindrops still resting on its petals.

Look at the flowers behind it. I can see they’re there, but my attention settles on the one in front. Looking at this photograph again, I find myself thinking about how much attention I give to what everyone else is doing. How are they growing? Where are they going?

All right, I have to ask myself, “Robert, What’s happening within you?”

Look closely at the drops along those white petals.

Plenty of daisies here, but my eye keeps coming back to this one.

The flowers behind it have softened into the background. Time to filter external noises out!

I’d like to let comparison do the same, long enough to hear my own thoughts.

What I notice now

Looking back at this photograph, I’m thinking about everything a camera leaves unseen. I can bring a raindrop into focus. The growth happening inside the flower is another matter.

A closer look, and those raindrops have my attention.

That’s where trust comes in for me. I want to trust the unseen within me, too. Give myself room to grow without checking someone else’s progress to decide whether I’m doing all right.

Easy enough to write! As you know, living it takes a bit more patience.

A moment from the original

Back in 2015, I shared these words, attributed to Kabir:

Alongside the photograph were words by Julia Cameron:

Reading that again, I’m glad I have this post to return to. “Spirit’s time” gives me something to sit with. I can be so ready to see the next thing unfold that I hurry past what has already been given.

Cameron’s passage makes room for a deep breath and a pause in all that striving. Today, I want to take that pause. Listen inward. Notice the blessings already taking shape in my own life, even when I haven’t quite found the words for them.

The Conversation Continues

Come sit with this daisy for a minute.

You may have something unfolding in your own life that deserves a little more patience than you’ve been giving it. I know I could use the reminder.

What helps you hear your own inner voice when you’ve been paying too much attention to everyone else?

I’ll leave the daisy here while you think. Those raindrops are worth another look.
