Macro Photography – Making room for small things

Few things are as satisfying as discovering the small details that make up the world around us. We hardly use coins anymore, yet when examined closely they contain evidence of design, wear, history, and countless human exchanges.

Coins have fascinated us for generations, yet they are slowly disappearing from everyday life. We are less likely to hear change jingling in a pocket, feed a quarter into a parking meter, or carry coins for the laundromat. Perhaps that makes this a good time to look at them again.

Time to break out the loose-change jar and discover the hidden treasures I have been holding on to.

Some of the smallest discoveries are hiding in the things we stopped noticing, tucked away in drawers.

• Soften harsh light.

Look Closely

• Notice tiny scratches.
• Pause to see the shine.
• Notice the dates, mint marks, worn edges, and scratches.

Take the Shot

• Focus on one fine detail.
• Reflect the soft light.
• Respond with your lens.
