Struggle, Ants in Monochrome

Macro Monday · Monochrome Monday · A tiny contest unfolding beneath our feet

Tiny World, Life is Not So Easy
Under our feet, another world is moving. Small enough to miss but certainly busy enough to matter. Life does not become simple just because it becomes tiny.
We measure struggle from where we stand.
But size changes depending on whose eyes are doing the looking.
What seems insignificant to us may be everything to someone else.
“Don’t overlook another’s struggle. It may only seem smaller because it isn’t yours.
– Robert

I nearly walked past this little confrontation without noticing it at all.
Then I stopped, looked closer, and realized there was an entire drama playing out beneath my shoes.
What began as a face-off quickly became a full-body negotiation. Jaws locked together. Was I actually capturing this with my iPhone?

Maybe they were fighting over food. Maybe it was all about territory. Maybe I had invented an entire ant-sized labor dispute when it started when one ant jumped the line to see the Queen. Oh Snap!
Watching them struggle reminded me how quickly something can look small when we are not the ones carrying its weight.
By the time I made this frame, I had stopped thinking of them as simply ants on the ground. These little beings had their own complex existence that I was being privileged to see merely because I stooped down to see closer.

For a few minutes, their tiny struggle had become large enough to hold my attention.

THE CONVERSATION CONTINUES
Notice What Seems Small

We move through so much of life at our own scale that it becomes easy to decide what matters before we have really looked. Sometimes slowing down is enough to reveal that something we considered tiny carries its own weight, effort, and urgency.
“What have you nearly overlooked because it seemed small to you, but may have been enormous to someone else?”
“Life stretches from the nearly invisible to the overwhelming. Its size often depends on where we stand when we look at it.”
