Photography 101: Home, Day One
When I think of home, I think of a place where you give love and it comes right back to you. Nothing says this to me more than my two cats. Benny and Boopers. They are Siamese cats. One’s a blue point, and the other is a seal point. Both are boys because boy cats are very loyal. These guys are always there first thing in the morning, calling through the bedroom door. “Meow, Meow! Wake up, wake up! It’s time to feed us.” After a long day at work, they greet me at the door. “Meow, Meow! Hurry up, Hurry up! It’s time to feed us.” Wait a minute… is that love or hunger? Well even when I get up early, I find my cats really just wanted to get into my room (their room) and climb into my bed (their bed, no, its really theirs) they just let me sleep there.
The couch, the rugs, my office chair really belong to Benny and Boopers. They can be found “cat-nappin” everywhere. On window seals and stretched out on the bare hardwood floors. If I sit in one place too long, it is a signal that it’s cat-in-lap time. They do not hesitate. At night when I’m in my home office at the computer, Benny will sit at my side or at my feet just staring up. Then he will pounce into my lap, my arms or go straight for my shoulders where he will make residence. It doesn’t matter what I was working on, this is Benny-time. People say cats are needy, that they need a lot of attention. Truth is that I need all that attention they give. So yes, you will see them grace the lens of my camera from time to time, for I need that reminder that with them there is no place like home. When I think of home, I think of Benny and Boopers giving me love, and I get to return their love.

Vacationing in the Paris Market on Broughton St., Savannah, GA. If you ever have been in this store once, then you would know exactly what I’m talking about. It’s almost like you are visiting another country, another way of seeing things. Beautiful!

My chocolate photos come from the preparation of the anniversary celebration with my partner of 4 years back in March of 2014. I like to surprise him, and surprise him I did. I live in Savannah, Georgia and right off Broughton Street in beautiful Historic Downtown. All those storefronts provided near endless inspiration for my secret task. One such establishment was Savannah Bee Company, known for their delicious variety of local honey products, such as their grilling honey, great on Georgia peaches, but i’ll save those pictures for another post. What is not commonly know is Savannah Bee Company has honey mead. Mead? Yes mead, like the time of knights, maids, noblemen. Mead is an alcoholic beverage made from fermenting honey with water and various fruits, spices, grains and hops. Good stuff. This was my first stop, and the lovely mead maid Danielle Hicks (local singer/song writer, bee keeper and good friend) suggested a cherry mead with spicy notes. Great choice, I must declare. So what then should I pair with spicy-sweet drink? Chocolate was Danielle’s reply.
So off to the one place I knew I could not go wrong when it comes to chocolate…Chocolat By Adam Turoni. Again on Broughton Street and again Savannah’s Best Kept Secret, its very own chocolatier known for Savannah Bee Honey Filled Chocolate Bars. I opened the doors, and there was to most elegant chocolate store on earth. Yeah, they put Godiva chocolate to shame. To the right and left, beautiful cases displaying hand crafted pieces of chocolate heaven. There were tables with chocolate masterpieces and those famous honey filled bars. I had one before, it was too good for words. Really! Many tourists filled the store, so I waited patiently to talk to the creator himself. I was on a mission for the perfect gift, and I didn’t just want a knowledgable sale girl when Adam was right there.
Charming and well spoken, this craftier of delights took me around the various glass cases offering his suggestions on the perfect pairing. In the end I took two of each. Needless to say the revealing of my anniversary surprise was pleasurable to the senses; sight, smell, and taste. The star of this show, Chocolate, oh, chocolate.

Look up they say, see the blue skies, the beauty of the rainbow, birds soaring on high. The heavens are all displayed with the beauty of God’s glory. Sometimes, I think, the beauty we need to see is at our feet. So, look down… Maybe get down on one knee… That’s right, a little closer to the ground… I dare you to even lie down.
Looking down. A fallen leaf. Ancient bricks. Moss on stone. Blades of grass struggling through broken, uneven cracks in sidewalks. Shadows, patterns, texture cast beneath our feet. A mosaic that tells a story to those who bend their ears close enough to hear.
I decided to repost pictures that I used in an earlier post because they best fit the subject of the challenge – refraction. Strolling through Historic Savannah’s Ellis Square, I captured what could be the quintessential images of summer childhood fun. A child’s chance to cool off in the summer heat shows what the very meaning of fun is. Historic Ellis Square is the back drop. Motion is still life as time slows to crawl.
