A lifetime of trust fits comfortably inside a single quiet moment.

Cats never apologize for slowing down.

There is a certain wisdom that arrives with age, and Benny carries it with remarkable grace.

He never measures a day by how much he accomplished. He measures it in warm places, familiar voices, gentle hands, and moments of quiet contentment.

Watching him reminds me that perhaps we have mistaken constant movement for meaningful living.

The camera did not ask me to hurry.

    It asked me to notice.

And Benny, as he has so many times before, showed me how.

When Benny came into our lives, I could not have imagined how deeply he would shape the rhythm of our home.

He has never cared about deadlines or schedules. He has never rushed through an afternoon or worried about tomorrow’s weather. Instead, he has quietly practiced something many of us spend a lifetime trying to relearn:

    being completely present.

As he has grown older, I have found myself slowing down with him.

Some conversations happen without a single word.

Our conversations are different now. They happen through familiar routines rather than words—a gentle scratch beneath his chin, the way he leans into my hand, the unmistakable expression that says he has chosen this exact moment to trust me completely.

This photograph was made during one of those moments.

    Nothing dramatic happened.

No extraordinary light filled the room.

    There was only Benny…

    resting comfortably…

and my hand reminding him that he was loved.

Photography often celebrates spectacular places and remarkable events.

But the photographs I treasure most rarely begin that way.

    They begin in ordinary rooms.

    On ordinary afternoons.

    He Trusts My Hands

Three quiet glimpses of Benny, each one reminding me that home is often found in the smallest routines.

With companions who quietly become extraordinary simply because they have shared so much of life’s journey beside us.

Benny has taught me many things over the years.

    Patience.

    Presence.

    Gentleness.

The quiet dignity that comes with growing older.

Most of all, he has reminded me that love seldom arrives with great fanfare.

More often, it rests quietly beside us, asking for nothing more than a gentle hand and a little of our time.

Perhaps that is why I continue photographing him.

Not because I am afraid of forgetting.

But because every photograph becomes another way of saying:

Thank you for walking through life with me.

The photographs I treasure most rarely begin with spectacle. They begin with trust.

    Before I Continued Walking…

Before I picked up my camera again,

Benny closed his eyes for just a moment

and leaned a little farther into my hand.

The photograph had already been made.

    The memory had not.

So I stayed a little longer.

    Walking into Grandma’s Kitchen

Lens-Artist Photo Challenge #256: In the Kitchen

Traveling back home to visit family in Baltimore always meant a trip to see my Grandma Mollie.

Stepping into to her home on Appleton Street was liking walking through a time warp.

The place to be in grandma’s house was the kitchen!

Iconic copper molds of every type lined the walls.

I have no memory of them ever being used.

Childhood memories, sights and smells of food cooking, grandma humming while “The Price is Right” flickered on the screen of a small tv with “rabbit ears” topped with tinfoil.

I know I got my love of cooking and recipes from my time with both grandmothers in their kitchens!

Throwback Thursday – Photography 101: Home,  Day One

When I think of home, I think of a place where you give love and it comes right back to you. Nothing says this to me more than my two cats.  Benny and Boopers.  They are Siamese cats.  One’s a blue point, and the other is a seal point.  Both are boys because boy cats are very loyal.  These guys are always there first thing in the morning, calling through the bedroom door.  “Meow, Meow!  Wake up, wake up!  It’s time to feed us.”  After a long day at work, they greet me at the door. “Meow, Meow!  Hurry up, Hurry up! It’s time to feed us.”  Wait a minute… is that love or hunger?  Well even when I get up early, I find my cats really just wanted to get into my room (their room) and climb into my bed (their bed, no, its really theirs) they just let me sleep there.

    [ngg src=”galleries” ids=”32″ display=”pro_mosaic”]

The couch, the rugs, my office chair really belong to Benny and Boopers.  They can be found “cat-nappin” everywhere.  On window seals and stretched out on  the bare hardwood floors.  If I sit in one place too long, it is a signal that it’s cat-in-lap time.  They do not hesitate.  At night when I’m in my home office at the computer, Benny will sit at my side or at my feet just staring up. Then he will pounce into my lap, my arms or go straight for my shoulders where he will make residence.  It doesn’t matter what I was working on, this is Benny-time.  People say cats are needy, that they need a lot of attention.  Truth is that I need all that attention they give.  So yes, you will see them grace the lens of my camera from time to time,  for I need that reminder, that with them there is no place like home.  When I think of home, I think of Benny and Boopers giving me love, and I get to return their love.
