    Storm off Sapelo Island

    Have you heard of Hurricane Nicole?

    Well, we didn’t when we made our plans and reservations for a tour of Reynolds Mansion on Sapelo Island which is only 1 hour away from Savannah. To get to the island we needed to catch a ferry.

    What… a ferry when a storm is coming?

    We made it! Even though somehow Hurricane Nicole decided to swing by our way, causing the coastal island to make plans to batten down the hatches!

    Neal and I had the best tour guide ever along with 2 other couples and an additional lady from New Jersey. After touring tabby ruins and the actual mansion, it was time to head towards the sea and the light house.

    Our tour guide drove up to the sand dune, opened the bus doors and asked if anyone wanted to go the boardwalk and view the water. Several of us “brave souls” took this opportunity to be one with “the wind and the waves“.

    The scene was amazing! Beautiful and scary! Powerful and strangely peaceful!

    This certainly was not man’s domain, no! Nature ruled here and was not afraid to show it!

    Finally a chance to get the wind in my hair! Ha Ha!

    Celebrating “WalkingSquares” challenge.

    Good morning Squarefriends! The day finds us walking through the seaport town of Darien, Georgia.

    We decided stay one night in Darien to catch the ferry over to Sapelo Island (Reynolds Mansion on Sapelo Island) the next day. This being Georgia, you know there is some historic site in every town, and at least one fort near by. Well, true that! Darien has both.

    The tabby walls in Darien, GA are the remnants of the town’s cotton exchange warehouses and naval stores built 1815-1830. 

    Tabby is a masonry building material made up of sand, lime (procured through the burning of oyster shell), oyster shell aggregate, and water.

    These materials are mixed into a slurry, poured into wooden molds called “shuttering”, and formed into foundations, walls, columns, or blocks; almost any application is possible. In Savannah, even streets are made of tabby.

    Centuries of weather and exposure has worn away at these structures.

    What a beautiful day walking through history and along the Darien River!

    Exploring the Historic Reynolds Mansion on Sapelo Island, Neal and I found many rooms still decorated with original furniture from the time period. The home had13 bedrooms, a bowling alley, billiards room, library and greenhouse.

    Celebrating “WalkingSquares” challenge.

    Good morning Squarefriends! I am catching up on my State Park Series from our pandemic travels.  During that time Neal and I visited all the state parks in Georgia save a few, 4 designated partner attractions or historic sites.

    Our long time goal was to travel to Sapelo Island (Reynolds Mansion on Sapelo Island) which is only 1 hour away. You need to catch a ferry to the island with public tours on Wednesday or Saturday but our attempts had been continually hampered by bad weather and other commitments.

    Well guess what… We made it! Hooray! (Even though somehow Hurricane Nicole decided to swing by our way, causing the coastal island to make plans to batten down the hatches!)

    Our first day was just finding out the “where” and the “how to” of this little excursion which took us to the Sapelo Island Visitor Center. Directly in front of the Accessible parking was this sign.

    A 1 mile loop, sounds easy and usually I like to walk a shorter trail.

    But wait one darn minute… Did I read that sign correctly? A closer look says…

    Obstacles on this little trail include sand, leaf litter, limbs and (here’s the kicker) venomous snakes!

    No sir!

    No ma’am!

    Not gonna do it! Spiders and snakes… Not…! My…! Friends!
