The Look Back: Urban Dwelling

Red brick apartments in Savannah with zigzagging black metal fire escapes, utility wires, a bare tree, green trash bins, and parked cars.

Savannah brick, two views, and all those steps.

Bronze-edged doorways lead toward a sunlit garden path, with a bronze compass and winding line in the upper-right shadows.

The Look Back 2013–2019: November 2017

First published November 21, 2017. Revisited with a new reflection.

We’re going back to November 2017. Two views of an older brick apartment building in Savannah, Georgia, with those black metal fire escapes working their way up the walls.

Let’s start with the color. In an old city filled with interesting architecture this is a gorgeous brick building!

Even with the cars and trash bins, that red brick gets my attention.

There’s so much variation in the brick, from orange-red to those darker patches around the windows.

My eyes get caught following the fire escapes from one landing to the next.

What I notice now

New York City is not the only place with crazy fire escapes! Looking back at this photograph, I’m thinking, “Must be easy to run into your neighbors on the way down.” “Oh, you’re coming up? Give me a minute!”

(At 59, I’m not climbing all those steps, I got bad knees now.)

A moment from the original

Back in November 2017, I kept it brief:

Closer view of Savannah brick apartments in sepia and blue-black tones, with metal fire escapes, crossing wires, and bare branches above a low brick wall.
My eyes keep following those stairs. Up, across, back down. Quite a workout from here!

I called it B&W then, though this view has a sepia tint with blue-black shadows. The closer framing gives those stairs and bare branches more room. Look at how the branches cross the railings!

I’m glad I have both views to return to. I like the warmth of the red brick, but those dark stairs against the pale sky keep pulling me back to this one.

The Conversation Continues

Take another look with me.

You might find your eye going somewhere different when the red brick gives way to those darker tones. Monochrome images can hold such depth! Which view holds your attention longer, the color or the sepia-toned photograph?

We can discuss it down here. I’m keeping my feet on the sidewalk!
