Reframing the Way We See

I was given a small piece of paper with seven words written across it:What is in the way, is the way.

Ok, let’s all think Ted Lasso’s “Believe”!

At first it sounded almost like a riddle, something simple enough to remember but difficult enough to keep thinking about. Into my pocket they went. Then into the car I moved my precious little note. Next the words found their way into my ridge wallet, compact but holding important items like id and debit cards.

The more I carried those words around, the less they sounded like advice and the more they felt like an invitation to notice.

We spend so much energy trying to get around the uncomfortable parts of life.
But what happens when, instead of immediately resisting them, we become curious about what they are asking us to see?

Maybe, just maybe… some obstacles are not detours from our lives at all. Maybe they are places “where living” asks a little more of us.

A few handwritten words landed in front of me and refused to remain just words.

That little note did not solve anything for me. It did something more useful: it made me stop long enough to reconsider what I had been calling “the problem”.

An Opportunity to Challenge Yourself

I eye the thing I keep calling a barrier standing exactly where the next door needs to open.
The question becomes less “How do I get around this?” and more “What happens if I go through?”

Maybe the thing blocking the door is also asking whether I am ready to open it.

Walking through does not promise that what waits on the other side will be easy. It simply means I have stopped allowing fear of the doorway to make the decision for me.

Change Your Angle, Reconsider

The object has not changed. I have only changed where I am standing.

That difference matters. From one position I notice the glowing direction; from another I see the supports, bends, wires, and construction that make the light possible.

Maybe reframing a problem works much the same way. We are not pretending the obstacle disappeared, no not at all. We are simply looking long enough to discover something about it that we could not see before. My attention shifts and so too do my actions!

Notice, Observe, Reflect – Take Action!

Resistance is difficult by definition. It is also how strength gets practiced.

The weights made the metaphor almost too perfect to ignore: strength does not develop because resistance disappears.

Think… what pushes against us becomes the very place where patience, courage, endurance, and wisdom get exercised. I fold the small piece of paper with seven words written across it and place it back into my pocket.

Ha, Ted Lasso! Put that above your door with some tape!
