There was a famous chef a few years (OK maybe decades) back who went to Europe to visit his family castle. The spirals were left handed – to give his family the advantage when drawing swords on those stone steps!
I was just visiting a small American town and one of the buildings had an outdoor wrought iron spiral to the second level.
Another small town I visited had a spiral stair to the second lookout level in a gazebo. :)
Cheers, Jules
