The Look Back: Landscapes in Portrait Mode

Overhanging branches frame blue sky and white clouds reflected in Falls Creek Lake, with wooded banks and fallen leaves scattered across the water.

A little room for the sky, a little time by the lake.

Bronze-edged doorways lead toward a sunlit garden path, with a bronze compass and winding line in the upper-right shadows.

The Look Back 2013–2019: December 2015

First published December 29, 2015. Revisited with a new reflection.

We’re going back to December 2015, when I shared this photograph for Shannon’s Creative Photo Challenge: Landscapes in Portrait Mode.

The visit itself was a year earlier, December 1, 2014, at Falls Creek Lake in Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, Georgia. Look at all that sky reaching down into the water. I can see why this one needed a vertical frame.

Come stand by the lake with me for a minute.

December at Falls Creek Lake. Even the clouds get a second look.

Those leaves floating near the bank bring my eyes right back down to where I was standing.

I look up through the branches, then find myself following the sky into the lake again. Reflections are amazing!

What I notice now

My first thought looking back was, “That photo looks dark.” The trees along the bank nearly disappear into the shadows. Then my eyes settle on the clouds and their reflection. There’s plenty of light in there once I stop looking only at the edges. Back to Lightroom for photo reprocessing.

I also tried the old link to Shannon’s challenge. It no longer opens. What happened? A move, a name change, a blog left behind? I don’t know.

Her comment is still on my post, though. In January 2016, Shannon noticed how the trees framed the sky above and in the reflection. Reading that again, I went straight back to the photograph to look.

A moment from the original (wordless post)

I let the photograph do the talking back in 2015.

Looking at it now, I’m glad someone thought to make a place where we could spend time in nature and renew that inner self. Step away from everyday life for a while. Have a look around without needing to hurry through it.

Over the years Neal and I have been back to this hidden lake scape and you can see why. Travel to find a peaceful place in the world. That’s the thought this photograph brings back for me. And I’m glad I brought a bit of this one home.

The Conversation Continues

Take me to your peaceful place.

Maybe you have a photograph that brings you back there, too. Where do you go when you need a break from everyday life?

I’d like to hear about it. You know me, I’ll probably want to bring the camera.
