Open Road: Painted Clouds

A divided highway stretches toward towering white clouds, with oncoming cars across the grassy median and a truck ahead near the horizon.
Towering white clouds rise above a tree-lined highway, with blue sky and thin cloud streaks overhead and distant vehicles below.

State Road through Soperton

We were traveling home to Savannah from Macon on June 30, 2021, passing the Soperton area along I-16. Believe it or not, this was one of the few times I wasn’t driving!

With Neal behind the wheel, I had my 11-inch iPad Pro on my lap to work on blogging. It gives “Blogging on the Go” a whole new meaning. Peering up from my work, the expansive view of road, trees, vehicles and sky interrupts my flow. I’m ready, raising the iPad, “Snap!” Guess who just captured multiple shots and then got back to the blog?

We would be home soon, but look at those clouds!

Highway lanes narrow toward the horizon beneath a large white cloud bank, with trees on both sides and a speed limit 70 sign on the right.
That sign is for the driver. I’m busy looking up!

I-16 has another name, State Route 404, its hidden state route designation across Georgia. Neal and I have booked some serious miles on this road over the years.

Looking ahead, the highway kept pointing us toward Savannah. Looking above it, those huge white clouds looked like they had been painted by Bob Ross himself!

I was quite happy with my assignment: sit beside Neal and take pictures.

Sky meets Road

Look at how the lane markings and the rows of trees draw your eye toward the same distant point.
Then those clouds rise above it, making the highway look tiny.

A divided highway stretches toward towering white clouds, with oncoming cars across the grassy median and a truck ahead near the horizon.
I can follow those lines all the way into the clouds. Getting home looks pretty good from here.

That’s the perspective I wanted to catch, the road disappearing beneath all that sky.
Even the truck ahead gives you a sense of just how much cloud we were looking at!

A Little More Sky, Please

Here’s a closer look at what had me reaching for the iPad. Those bright edges and gray folds give the clouds so much shape.

A close view of a towering white cloud formation with gray folds and rounded edges, framed by dark treetops beneath blue sky.
Bob Ross would have needed plenty of white paint for this one!

I could keep looking through this photograph and finding another curl or shadow.
You can see why one snap wasn’t going to do it!
