    Vintage Cities: Macon

    In your hometown, mine and/or every other city you will find buildings, beautiful and old abandoned, not forgotten. Traveling home after twenty plus years I found my familiar haunts to be long gone, boarded up, glass panes knocked out, possibly by delinquents? I don’t know. I’m greatly saddened!

    These relics of the past are but former shadows of their glory, once the soul of Main Street. Still there is such detail in the architecture, history in the bricks, ghosts in the partially boarded up windows. Reflections on glass and sun withered paper reveal happier times, peering into a world that no longer exists. Those simpler times, while begging, praying for resurrection or at least transformation into something new, lasting…

    This Flag that I Love – Ode to Veterans 2018

    This year I was traveling to Atlanta, Canton, Georgia to be exact,  so I won’t get to see the Veterans Day Parade. These are my photos from then.

    I usually enjoy walking down River Street and Broughton Street, in Savannah, Georgia.  Flags blowing in the wind, hanging from everywhere, and in the hands of veteran well-wishers.  The city really turns out for the celebration. Cameras in hand and folks hold signs, children on shoulders of fathers overlooking the crowded sidewalks to the marching solders.

    Families walking together, little children asking, “Why are we having a parade today?”

    Their parents signal a reply by shaking the hands of the veterans standing nearby under flags backlit by sunlight. This is why they whisper.

    “Thank you for your service!“

    “It was my honor, Ma’am, Sir!”

    Saluting, as the children salute back.

    Veteran with four tours in Iraq, 23 years in the military and still this man, me, is much afraid of arachnids, SPIDERS! Yes indeed!  They creep me out!  It doesn’t help that every time my eye spies a spider I have to move in close to take a picture.  I guess its fascination?  Not sure…

    Tiny webs float through the air.  Most don’t notice, I do.  A flutter of little legs, maybe 8 of them. I jump, I flench, I cringed!  I???

    I look closer, he’s not actually moving. He’s, he’s just plastic!?!

    Oh my heart!!!

    Ok it’s back in my chest now. Really, seriously, no I was scared… but only for a second!

    People Portraits: Hello Again

    A portrait captures a moment that’s gone forever; they are impossible to reproduce. Street Photography: Savannah Food Day Festival. My goal in this series is to create a really awesome frame of people existing because they allowed me time to share their world.

    I love the healthy community that is Savannah. A classic example of people coming together for a common good is the annual Food Day Festival held in Daffin Park, Savannah.  Folks from all over show up for a day of health conscious contemplation. Animals straight from local farms, solar cooking aperatuses, children laughing sitting on hay bales, live local music on a bandstand, essential oils and hydro planters set the perfect environment for sharing in a people-centric ecosystem.  Everywhere I turned I saw friends and smiles on the faces of strangers … I mean soon to be friends! Workshops and lectures happen under tents as participants crowd in close. My camera in hand, always, I engage the public and the stage is set.

    A local artist and herbalist, Sarah was a delight, and her soulful interaction with me gave me the nerve to ask if I could photograph her. I feel my portrait shots don’t convey the beautiful subject the justice she deserves, and after our conversation I was thoroughly convinced this is the healthy, happy community I wanted to be a part of!
