People Portraits: Second Sunday
A portrait captures a moment that’s gone forever; they are impossible to reproduce. Street Photography: Second Sunday, The High Museum of Art. My goal in this series is to create a really awesome frame of people existing right then because they honored me time to share their world.
I am very happy to be living the retired life for several reasons: First I get to travel to Atlanta any day of the week without messing up my schedule, and second because retired military (Veterans) get free admission and parking at the High Museum of Art for life! Thank you Home Depot Veterans Foundation!
Speaking of seconds, Second Sunday is family free day at the museum. Yes, everyone can enjoy the retired life on this day at the museum and be surrounded by family and the most beautiful artifacts from around the world. Many kids now can learn about cultures and historical periods sharing the experience with their loved ones.
On this particular second Sunday, I sat totally absorbed in an exhibit with headphones attached, watching a video on the wall. Neal tapped me on the shoulder, “Look”, he said, motioning besides me. I turned to relish my next portrait.
All I could see were two people, as one in the moment sharing, listening and being. I paused, then asked politely, “May I capture this moment?” Such love, care and interest! Afterwards, as I continued to enjoy the exhibit in another part of the museum, I noticed the same family as Grandmother or “Abuela” called lovingly to the young girl, “See here, look,” motioning eagerly at a painting.
Just one example of the power of Second Sunday at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta!

Savannah is a happening town! Every other week there is a Jazz Fest or Film Fest and this weekend was no exception. The community turned out in droves for the Isle of Hope Art and Music Fest. Another example of people coming together for a common good. Artists of every kind, food trucks, and live local music on a bandstand. With interesting people all around and camera in hand, I look for the invitation.
A couple of festival goers enjoying the day. That cool mustache! He walks by once, then twice, then again as I’m waiting at the Irish Food truck. Well I would certainly call that an invitation, so I ask for the privilege of taking a portrait. They smile and agree.
I told you the mustache was cool!

This Flag that I Love – Ode to Veterans 2017
This year I was traveling to Atlanta so I missed the Veterans Day Parade. I usually enjoy walking down River Street and Broughton Street, in Savannah, Georgia. Flags blowing in the wind, hanging from everywhere, and in the hands of veteran well-wishers. The city really turns out for the celebration. Cameras in hand and folks hold signs, children on shoulders of fathers overlooking the crowded sidewalks to the marching solders.
Families walking together, little children asking, “Why are we having a parade today?”
Their parents signal a reply by shaking the hands of the veterans standing nearby under flags backlit by sunlight. This is why they whisper.
“Thank you for your service!“
“It was my honor, Ma’am, Sir!”
Saluting, as the children salute back.
