    Savannah Food Day Festival: A Jeweler’s Eye

    I love the healthy community that is Savannah. A classic example of people coming together for a common good is the annual Food Day Festival held in Daffin Park, Savannah.  Folks from all over show up for a day of health conscious contemplation. Animals straight from local farms, solar cooking aperatuses, children laughing sitting on hay bales, live local music on a bandstand, essential oils and hydro planters set the perfect environment for sharing in a people-centric ecosystem.  Everywhere I turned I saw friends and smiles on the faces of strangers … I mean soon to be friends! Workshops and lectures happen under tents as participants crowd in close. My camera in hand, always, I engage the public and the stage is set.

    A local jewelry maker, Ben Chaffee traveled the world collecting wonders and now share them through his company Culture-Cross. Ben was full of energy and respect. Culture-Cross is a unique collaboration between international designers, indigenous tribal communities and craftspeople, philanthropists, development and aid groups, and of course appreciators of quality cultural art and jewelry. I was truly fascinated by his display and our conversation. Ben allowed me to photograph and share on the blog.

    Savannah is experiencing a welcomed season of cool.

    Sunday morning’s walk took on a new yet familiar feel, as an old friend, welcomed again, greeted me.  Hey Autumn; Hey Robert! An Autumn Stroll.

    Cool was the morning air, crisp and vibrant, magical.  Leaves on sidewalks, stalks from corn, hay bales on storefronts and pumpkins from patches torn.  I must join with their browns and oranges, their yellows and rust.  They permeate, penetrate, pervade and imbue all I see.   It is a time of change — diminishing daylight and falling temperatures bring a remembrance of hand holding and snuggling at evening’s twilight.  But wait, don’t wander too far in reminisce because this morning’s journey had just begun.

    My day is off to a glorious start.  An Autumn stroll has charged my heart.

    Historic Trustee’s Garden, Savannah, Georgia.  A city built brick upon brick. What are the stories found beneath layers of paint, the plaster, between the mortar and stone. A rich history lies, but who is listening? Who will take the time to be anthropologist and search out the truths behind walls.     People Portraits: Savannah Food Day Festival 

    A portrait captures a moment that’s gone forever; they are impossible to reproduce. Street Photography: Savannah Food Day Festival. My goal in this series is to create a really awesome frame of people existing because they allowed me time to share their world.

    A local artist and herbalist, Sarah was a delight, and her soulful interaction with me gave me the nerve to ask if I could photograph her. I feel my portrait shots don’t convey the beautiful subject the justice she deserves, and after our conversation I was thoroughly convinced this is the healthy, happy community I wanted to be a part of!     I live in sunny, hot Savannah, Georgia. Believe it or not, it is pretty warm in the Fall and Winter too. When deciding on where to go for our honeymoon, Neal and I chose beautiful Asheville, North Carolina. We stayed at the cutest bed and breakfast in Weaverville, a neighboring town. Waking up the next morning I found everything covered in ice crystals or frozen. Yes, we were definitely not in Savannah anymore!

    Since December 2016, I have been on a quest to know and visit the National Parks of America.  It struck me that “connect” as our subject would work in the following two ways. First to share a passion that I have come to know, America by way of her vast National Parks Service.  They are as diverse as the people who make up this great land. “From sea to shining sea”, these parks represent the “purple mountains majesty” and all the plains in between.  Second, this post allows me a small opportunity to connect you/us to the vast history our Founding Fathers and all those who died, struggled, dug, fought, built and discovered to make a “Land of the Free” and “a Home of the Brave!”
